Creating a Pumpkin – Day 1
October 14, 2009  |  by Jonathan Williamson  |  Intermediate, Jonathan Williamson, Modeling, Tutorials

In the spirit of Halloween, today we will take you through the process of modeling a pumpkin. This tutorial uses a combination of mirror and lattice modifiers to create a model that can easily be shaped without disfiguring the original mesh.

    1. Awesome website, I’m going to try this tutorial and see how it goes. I’m new to blender and 3d modeling.

    2. Excellent tutorial. It taught me lots of new and very useful controls (such as Shift-Z to exclude the Z axis when scaling and Shift-Alt click to loop select). Also, your introduction to the lattice modifier demonstrates its power wonderfully. I’ll definitely be watching more of your tutorials! Thank you.

    3. A video preview would be welcome to evaluate before buying. Does it have subtitles? Foreign users might have trouble with spoken language.
Also, it would be nice if all of the pumpkin videos could be bought at once (discount, maybe?).

      • The video is streamed for free at a lower resolution just below the “Purchase” button. You make a good point about buying the videos together though, I will mention it to Wes.

        • I feel so stupid. I was at my job’s computer when I posted and vimeo is blocked there, so I couldn’t see the video. Thanks, I’ll take a look.

It’s the first time I visited CG Cookie and Blender Cookie. I loved both sites and loved also the tutorial. Congratulations!!! I’ll try to make my version of the pumpkin here…

    5. Hi, i have one problem, i get all rigth till the loop cuts (3:00) when i start scaling the spheare takes some strange forme, something like a mutant pumpkin jajajaja, can get good scaling in those horinzontal loops.

I follow all your steps and the outcome isnt any way near as good as yours. I use 2.49, maybe its the version, dont know, some people are already working with 2.5.

Please if you could give me a hand, it would be great.

P.D: Sorry for my english, is nos quiet good!

      • If you are getting odd results while scaling you are probably scaling along the normals, Alt + S. Make sure your Alt key is not stuck down. If you continue to have problems could you post a screenshot of the issue?

    6. I dont see how you converted the triangles, i have been trying every combination of J there is…and I can’t see what shift-J is mapped to?? Awesome tut, sorry for the newbie question.

      Aaron

      • You can merge adjacent triangles into quads by selecting them and hitting Shift + J. In some cases the triangles will not merge into a quad because they don’t form a concave quad. When this happens you may need to move some vertices around (using W > Smooth works quite well too) before they will merge correctly.

    7. How do u select only one line like on 10:04…..help…..

    8. Great tutorial, love your work!

I use ALT+M for merge, it just saves that nano-second of modelling time! ;)

      Keep up the good work.

    9. Hello I am very new to Blender (like three days old with it) and still have no idea on how to 3d model. I am very into this type of thing but would be very much grateful if someone could show me a link to kind of cap the hot keys and buttons he pressed here. Also very nice video eventually I hope to at least be able to do that :)

    10. Hello ,
Can I take Your Tutorials And I will TRy To translate It To french ?

      • Hi Ryuuzakid,

You are more than welcome to translate the tutorial into French. What would probably work best, since we do not allow the tutorials to be downloaded or streamed on other sites, is if you were to put together a audio file in French to replace the English audio and then send it to us and we can trade them. At which point we would add the video as an alternative on the site. The other option would be to create French subtitles if you’d like.

We appreciate your offer and support!

    11. Hi Jonathan :-D

I just wanted to say how awesome these Halloween tutorials are :-D I learned a lot :-D (ok, it’s been more than a month since I did them, but they’re still great :-D )

    12. Hi Jonathan :)

How do you add loops (at 2:48)?

    13. Never mind. I watched the tutorial further and found the answer (feeling pretty dumb now)…
      Thanks for the great tutorials!!

    14. jonathon your tutorials are really clear and useful thanks a lot.

If it’s not too much to ask can u show how u would use the grease pencil in a more smoother way especially for planning something like the interior of a car.

    15. I too was having a problem converting triangles to quads with Shift+J. After some poking around I found out it’s Alt+J, at least that’s the case for v2.5.2.

Great tutorials! Keep up the good work.

    16. At 6:30, you say to hit comma to extrude towards the individual center. I’ve tried several times without success. Is this different in v2.5.2?

      • He hits the comma in order to undo what happened when he hit period. ’s’ to scale is still needed to scale the edge loop.
