In this quick tip we will go through the process of setting up a infinite ground plane with shadows to better display your model. The tip also looks at a couple of tweaks while using Ambient Occlusion to adjust the shadows.

Very usefull tip…
You Smoke helium during you screencast or it’s my computer..?:-)
Ha not that I am aware of. I will double check the sound and replace the video if needed. Thanks for the heads up!
Great tip! Yes your sound has a flanger type effect happening, almost like you set an environment on your mic/sound.
Useful. The sound on the video sounds distorted. The sound of the sound? Doesn’t seem right for some reason…
Thanks alot! I’ve been trying to do this for a long time now.
Nice one! More tuts on AO/GI and general lighting issues would be very welcome as well. Let’s hope Kernon will keep the promise and shed more light on it in Urban Stairway pt5
Thank you.
Simply brilliant!
…I really think about gettin a cg-citizenship…let’s see how good the next few tutorials are
If you have enjoyed the previous tutorial I think you will find this weeks lineup very appealing
If paypal wasn’t being silly at the moment… I would have been a “citizen” the day Wes introduced it. Yes, the tuts and resources are more than worth it.
Thanks! I too am thinking of getting a cg-citizenship too! Because you’re videos so far are awesome!
When will the next car tutorial be out? I’m really looking foreward to it!
Expect it within the week
Such a simple tip, such immediate results – thanks again Helium Boy

Okay the sound issue has been resolved. A updated video will be online soon!
Excellent! This is a great tip, although I did first see it over on Blender Newbies a while ago.
Wow! Thanks again! This is much simpler than the method I’ve used
As always, great tutorial/ tip. =) One question though: One the render posted on top of this page you have a nice darker ‘edge’ going on the front plane of your cube. How did you do this? I might be missing the obvious here, but it’s late, so please bare with me. =P
This is done by overlaying a wireframe of the object. You can find a tip on the method here: http://www.blendercookie.com/2009/05/02/tip-wireframe-overlay/
Awesome, thanks! =) I can’t believe I missed that tip video. =P
Very Usefull ! Thanks !
This is a great one indeed , all that time fixing the camera and resizing the huge plane even bigger
… thanks .
dear jonathan williamson,
How to get the same ground plan effect in Yafaray?
Unfortunately I am not sure as I have very little experience in Yafaray.
OK but how do you change the background color? I am a noob.
Jonathan, any chance of this getting an update for 2.5? I would love to see this and some others updated.
Nice trick tha looks nice i think i will use this technique while trying the alien walk cycle
Hi. Thank you for your tutorial.
I would just ask you. What to change to make this render as well in GameEngine.
Best regards,
Pete
Any idea on how to recreate this in 2.5 alpha 2. Doesn’t seem to work.
thanks
lol I never thought of that! Thanks for the tip.
Can’t figure out how to do this in Blender 2.53…
Ok, finally got it to work in Blender 2.5!
What I did was I turned on the Transperancy (ZTransperancy), with only Alpha changed, which was set to 0.5 (I found that setting it to 1 will always make the shadow completely black).
Then under Shadow, I unchecked Receive and checked Shadows Only.
