This quick Blender 2.5 video tip demonstrates how to use viewport snapping to lock the viewing angle to any 45 degree increment. This feature is similar to the viewport navigation that is found in ZBrush.

great feature.. I had no idea it was there. I good picture this being very useful.
Great feature here
I tried it with the 26759 optimized release and it worked.
The target of the snapping feature seems to be the “3D Cursor”.
Try this feature in the “Local” view (/ key).
These tips that are also development updates at the same time are absolutely marvellous.
This is a very nice feature that i’m going to use a lot, thanks for the tip.
btw, it worked in revision 26510 for me.
This was already in 2.4x but with the Ctrl key.
Thank you anyway! Is always good to remid this things!
@Anonymus- Thanks for this hint about 2.4x
I think the feature has been in there since the alpha 0 initial release (as I typed that, I just checked, and it’s there). It had gone unnoticed because of the fact that zoom was also linked to the same key (It used to be bound to Ctrl instead of Alt). I had moved zoom over to the alt key and had access to it, as 2.49 also had viewport snapping set to Ctrl. Something about the new keybinding system had made zooming overriding the snapping feature.
Time to get Alpha 1 released! The splash screen is there already…:)
Booo… I wasn’t aware of this for such a long time!
It’s awesome, really speeds up navigation…
I just downloaded an Alpha 1 build from graphicall.org and the snap feature is included in that one too
Great to know, these development updates are really appreciated.
I’d say, there is nothing more comfortable then using the “Turntable” orbit mode in blender. It can be turned on in the preferences… I have no idea why people would use the trackball orbit mode.
I think turntable should be the default. Anyone with me?
@FreeMind;
I totally agree with you .. I think having trackball selected as the default is a huge barrier for new users.
