Tip: Adding Extra Detail with a Displace Modifier
April 6, 2010  |  by Jonathan Williamson  |  Beginner, Featured, Jonathan Williamson, Modeling, Tips, Tutorials

This quick Blender 2.5 video tip demonstrates how to use a displace modifier in conjunction with textures to add extra detail to a mesh. Using this technique can help provide another level of depth to a model with relative ease that otherwise would have to be done manually or through bumpmaps.

    1. Hey, that’s a nice technique. But how can I autoupdate the mesh while manipulating the corresponding displacement texture?
      Thanks.

    2. You can also use a script called “Landscape Generator (A.N.T.)”, it makes really cool landscapes and is very easy to use. Unfortunately, its only available in 2.49…

    3. Jonathan the great tutorial although I can speak very good blender I look for fun and pleasure is always strongly as the other ongoing.

    4. Yegor, you can’t _auto_update your mesh, but you can quickly and easily update it simply by hitting the TAB key to go into editmode and then again to go back out.

    5. radialronnie, thanks. yeah, i noticed that, but thought it could be another way…

    6. Nice tutorial, Johnathan!
Really, I was intrigued by your Fluid tutorial. As before this I tried several times to make simulation in Blender by myself so I’m continuing doing it. And I hope to know something new about this theme because the first part gave me more tips than I already known.

      (sorry for my English)

    7. cool! i’ve tried that before, but usually used Weight Paint to deform the stuff, and not an actual texture… usually didn’t give very good results, lol :D

    8. again Jonathan an on point easy to follow and understand tutorial that works well in multiple levels of Blender 2.5
until now i have just used the sculpt tools to make terrains but mainly because i get control of the results
keep up the excelent work and i will keep advertising this site as long as there are peolpe using blender on earth

    9. absolutely professionally done–fantastic work and he should be proud of his work
